Why was the Mexican–American War so one sided?

I'm aware that the Americans had superior numbers but that shouldn't alone account for the whitewash state of some of the battles. For example, at the Battle of the Sacramento River Americans forces dominated their foes with Americans casualties in single figures while Mexican casualties were over 500.
