Why wont my 89 jeep cherokee crank over?

My 89 jeep cherokee over heated and when I turned it of It wouldn't start again, when I turn the key it makes like a whirring noise, all of my dash lights work so I don't think its the battery, I tried starting it in nuetral and nothing, Please help
